Episode 507: Anna Valencia (Vote Her In, Episode 67)
Chicago City Clerk, and Democratic primary candidate for Illinois Secretary of State, Anna Valencia, grew up in Granite City, IL, a small town in Southern Illinois. Her father is a union painter and her mother worked for a non-profit. After becoming the first in her family to graduate from college, Anna dedicated her career to public service. She became City Clerk of Chicago in January 2017 and has worked tirelessly to build a clerk’s office that benefits all Chicagoans. Anna is a millennial leader who uses innovative thinking and her working-class roots to guide her office and make city services more accessible and equitable.
Among her notable projects as City Clerk, is the Chicago Status of Women and Girls Working Group, a partnership of more than 120 women and girls, a diverse group across sectors and industries, including government, education, nonprofits, corporations, and the service industry. The Task Force has issued a comprehensive set of 20 recommendations to make Chicago a safer and more equitable home for women and girls. “We took all of the members’ individual expertise to create a united coalition and harness our collective power to create a set of recommendations that are inclusive and intersectional,” said Clerk Valencia. “Since day one, the goal of this Working Group has been, not only to make Chicago the best city to be a woman or girl in, but to let them know that we value them and their critical role in our City’s future.”
