Elected on a platform headlined by her support for powerful new gun control laws, Kelly has been steadfast in this advocacy as well as become a leader on other issues that help families lead healthy lives and live in safe communities. Among her important recent work has been advocacy for decreasing maternal deaths; in the US particularly and tragically high among African American women. Along with sister, and neighboring, Member Lauren Underwood, Kelly is a powerful and inspirational role model for women throughout Illinois, having also served in legislative and executive office in the state and holding a Ph.D.in political science.
